Waste Management

Benefiting the Environment

The Ministry for the Environment with the support of Winstone Wallboards commissioned a report looking at reuse options for plasterboard, and the composting of plasterboard specifically.

The literature review collated and summarised information on:

  • the benefits and disadvantages of adding waste plasterboard to compost products
  • differences between composting technologies
  • challenges and solutions to on-site processing
  • collection and distribution challenges
  • economic and financial issues
  • environmental and health impacts
  • other applications for reprocessing or reuse of waste plasterboard.

As gypsum is used as a natural fertiliser and soil conditioner the reuse of GIB® plasterboard into compost provides a similar benefit and reduces the environmental impact from waste going to landfill.
