GIB® Intertenancy Barrier Systems are engineered to deliver cost effective, lightweight and NZ Building Code compliant intertenancy walls for attached dwellings.

Below are some of the more commonly asked questions received from builders and designers via the GIB® Helpline to help you install the system as efficiently as possible.

Q: Installing the GIB® Wall Clips onto the GIB® H Studs can be difficult if the GIB® H-Studs happen to be positioned directly behind the framing studs.

A: Cut one of the GIB Barrierline® sheets lengthwise by 30-50mm to offset the GIB® H-Studs to the framing studs allowing easier wall clip installation.

Q: Do GIB® Wall Clips need to be placed on every row of nogs?

A: No, GIB® Wall Clips only need to be placed within 600mm of the top of each GIB® H-stud. No further than 3000m apart vertically.

Q: Can GIB® H-Studs be used at the horizontal sheet joint when placing one row of GIB Barrierline® panels on top of another?

A: No, GIB® Rondo® 140 Perimeter Channel is required to be used at horizontal sheet joints. Place the channels back-to-back and screwed together to support the GIB Barrierline® sheets.

Q: Do penetrations in the interior plasterboard walls such as flush boxes and switchboards need to be fire rated as part of GIB® Intertenancy Central Barrier systems?

A: Page 9 of the GIB® Intertenancy Barrier Systems for Terraced Homes manual has detailed information for flush boxes and plumbing penetrations. For other situations, like a switchboard or other larger penetrations, you will need to build a baffle box in the framing to maintain the Fire Rating. Please call the GIB® Helpline team 0800 100 442.

Q: In the roof cavity, is an additional layer of GIB® plasterboard required to be fixed over the top of GIB Barrierline®?

A: For a 60minute FRR 13mm GIB Weatherline® or 13mm GIB Fyreline® is to be laminated to one side of the GIB Barrierline®. Where a 30minute FRR is required a layer of 10mm GIB Weatherline® or 13mm Fyreline is required. The laminated layer should extend a minimum of 200mm below the ceiling level and should be fixed using the GIB® Laminator or 40mm x 8g chipboard screws at 400mm maximum centres.

Q: GIB Barrierline® has been out in heavy rain for a few weeks, is it still ok to use?

A: GIB Barrierline® sheets, once installed, can be exposed to the weather for up to 12 weeks. When used as an overlay in the roof space, 13mm GIB Fyreline® can be exposed for up to 4 weeks and GIB Weatherline® can be exposed for up to 12 weeks.

Q: Are there GIB® details for cantilevers at the end of a building?

A: GIB® detail GNS311 is suitable for cantilevers up to 1.2m. GNS310 can be used for cantilevers over 1.2m. Both details are available at www.gib.co.nz

Q: I have a section of GIB Barrierline® wall which extends ‘outside’ onto a deck area, do we have to put insulation out there too?

A: No, the insulation is only there to assist with Noise Control. As it is ‘outside’ the building envelope insulation is not required. In this situation GIB Weatherline® could also be used.
