Roma Edwards is a Kiwi motorcross champion.

At 21, she’s already won both the British and New Zealand Women’s championships and is definitely a name to watch out for.

After taking out both titles, Roma returned to her hometown Nelson last year to recover from much needed ankle surgery.

During her recovery, she’s been working part-time for her number one supporter, her dad Tim, at his building business Edwards Ltd, and says that without him, she wouldn’t be where she is today.

“He was a former motocross racer himself and my three sisters and I started riding when we were very young, I was around four and I first started competing at 11.

“We spent just about every weekend racing, it was a very cool upbringing,” she says.

Even with the setback of surgery and having to take time out to recover, Roma says it was something she was grateful for.

“I really enjoyed working with my dad, I was able to take that much needed time out, and I think it’s made me more determined now than ever to get back into competition,” she says.

Now that Roma has fully recovered, she’s on a mission to regain her national title, having been offered the opportunity to do pre-season training in the United Kingdom in June.

Roma will travel from Surrey to Bristol and then on to Wales to race against other motocross riders ahead of the New Zealand season which starts in October.

Dad Tim winning Winstone Wallboards recent promotion to celebrate the opening of the new GIB® Tauranga facility, could not have come at a better time. He’s gifted the $7500 prize to Roma to towards her time in the UK which she says will be a huge help.

“Thankfully I’m able to borrow a bike and gear to use while I’m there, but it’s still a massive cost and I have to juggle work around competing, so I’m just so thankful to dad and Winstone Wallboards,” she says.

“I’m determined to get that New Zealand Women’s title red plate back, so I feel so fortunate for all the support.”

Winstone Wallboards' promotion ran from 1st February to 31st March 2024, giving away over $40,000 in prizes ranging from Swanndri vouchers to $7500 travel vouchers.  Tim Edwards won the travel prize, which he will gift to his daughter Roma.
